How the editor fits into daily work

Windsurf is a proprietary desktop IDE built around Cascade, its coding agent. The interface will feel familiar to Visual Studio Code users, including support for many extensions, keybindings and common project workflows. Cascade can inspect project context, explain unfamiliar code and coordinate an implementation while showing proposed changes for review.

The free tier provides enough access to test the editor, but model usage is capped. Pro adds a larger monthly allowance and access to more capable models, while team and enterprise plans add centralized billing, administration and security controls. Allowances, model availability and the way extra usage is charged have changed over time, so heavy agent use can make the final cost less predictable than the base subscription suggests.

Where Windsurf works best

• Do use it for: exploring an unfamiliar repository, completing repetitive implementation work and making coordinated refactors where every diff can be reviewed.
• Do keep checkpoints: Cascade can modify several related files quickly, but a plausible plan can still produce broken assumptions or unnecessary edits.
• Do not choose it for: workflows tied to another IDE, environments that prohibit cloud model processing or tasks where generated changes cannot be tested.
• Do not treat it as autonomous: it remains most effective with focused instructions, a clean version-control state and regular human review.
