Overview

What is Synfig Studio?

How Synfig builds motion

Synfig is centered on cut-out and vector animation rather than drawing every frame. You assemble artwork in layers, set key poses, and let interpolation create the in-between motion. Bones and deformation tools help rig characters, while gradients, filters, masks, and parameter linking support more elaborate scenes. It can also incorporate bitmap assets, though its workflow feels closer to a technical animation package than a painting app. Project files remain editable, and finished work can be rendered to video or image sequences.

Where it fits best

  • Explainer scenes: Animate logos, diagrams, and text with reusable keyframes.
  • Character shorts: Rig layered figures for dialogue shots and simple body motion.
  • Classroom projects: Teach tweening and compositing without buying licenses.

There are no subscriptions or feature tiers. The tradeoff is a dated interface, uneven documentation, and a learning curve that can make basic setup slower than expected.
