Define metrics in LookML
Model dimensions, measures, joins, and permissions in version-controlled projects.
Looker is a business intelligence platform for modeling governed metrics on top of SQL warehouses. It is strongest when a data team needs one reusable semantic layer behind self-service reporting and customer-facing analytics.
Looker sits directly on supported SQL databases rather than importing data into a proprietary cube. Data teams define dimensions, measures, joins, and access rules in LookML, then business users explore that governed model through dashboards and ad hoc queries. This creates consistent definitions, but modeling work and Git-based deployment require technical ownership.
Looker is sold by Google Cloud through custom contracts, with cost shaped by deployment, users, and usage. There is no dependable public entry price. Budget for implementation and warehouse query costs as well as the license; Looker Studio is a separate, lighter product and should not be mistaken for a free Looker tier.
